After the elimination of a tax collected by the DuPage Water Commission, the county’s sales tax has dropped by a quarter-cent. It is now 7 cents on every dollar instead of 7.25 cents on every dollar.

The sales tax cut will save DuPage County consumers a total of $36 million each year, according to a press release from DuPage County on Wednesday.

The elimination of the sales tax comes as the Water Commission moves to a self-sustaining utility. The DuPage Water Commission also lowered its water rates by one percent for the upcoming year, which took effect May 1.

The commission paid back $70 million in bonds 18 months early, saving taxpayers $10 million in interest payments.
