NBC 5 Chicago: Tax Drop Goes Into Effect for Chicago’s Western Suburbs

Shoppers will now leave stores in DuPage County with a little more cash as a tax reduction goes into effect Wednesday.

Starting June 1, general merchandise purchased in DuPage County will be lowered by a quarter cent, meaning consumers will pay 7 percent sales tax instead of 7.25 percent.

The county raised the sales tax three decades ago to help the DuPage Water Commission tackle its finances.

“I don’t know the last time we’ve seen any governmental unit actually abolish a tax like we have done,” DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin told the Chicago Tribune.

Officials estimate the sales tax rollback will save taxpayers $36 million.
